A sudden visit to Chapel Hill...
Tonight, Grant came down with a pretty high fever. Emily and Mama took him in to Carteret General at about 9:00, and Mama has just called to tell us that they're sending him to Chapel Hill tonight. Kevin is on his way in, to join Grant and Emily, and Mama's headed over to their house to stay with the other kids. Please keep them all in your prayers. He wasn't really feeling very good today, and there's no need to worry, but his numbers are too low to not go ahead up there and get a blood transfusion tonight. We'll keep the site updated with any other information.

Here's a quick note from Emily that she sent a couple of hours ago...
" Good morning one and all! Yes, we are up in our home away from home. Its 4 am and the nurses have just checked us in and we are waiting for the Dr. to come by. It looks as though we will probably be here for 2 or 3 days. AAAGGGHHHH! This too shall pass!
The nurse said that they will run blood cultures to see what type of infection Grant has and that it may take 72 hours to determine! We will do a variety of antibiotics until the cultures show something conclusive, and then do more specific medicines once there is a source of infection. They have already ordered blood for a transfusion, so we will do that over-night, or tomorrow morning - a rapidly approaching tomorrow morning!
Michael McKinney was able to go home earlier, so we're in his room! And we're excited to see that Colby is next door, so we will get to visit with him tomorrow!

Just talked to Emily- she said that Grant's fever was 102 when they got to Chapel Hill, but it broke a few hours ago- the doctor said irregardless of the fever, his counts were so low he needed to be in the hospital anyway. So, he's finishing a blood transfusion right now and is getting iv's of antiobiotics too.
Dr. Blatt will be in to see Grant in just a little while, and will be better able to determine what will need to happen in the next couple of days.
There is absolutely no panic here- Em and Kevin have been told that this is quite the normal for Grant at this stage of treatment. The chemo drugs are doing their job, unfortunately, the drugs attack the good cells as well as the bad ones.

I heard about Grant this morning when I got to work. I am sorry to hear he isn't well. The pics I took of him yesterday on the cycle are great. One of them has a million dollar smile on his face. Tell him we hope he gets better soon and he can ride anytime. Everyone is praying for him. Love you--
Hello again- it's Monday evening and I spoke to Em about an hour ago. Grant still is running a fever, but no cause has been determined yet. He's content in his room building with Lincoln Logs brought to him by his favorite Dr. Romano and her sweet husband.
They say that Grant will have to stay until Wednesday when the blood cultures can eliminate some dangerous possibilities. Even as closely as we watched Grant around the other kids last week, it is likely that he got a bit of the bug that several others around him had. So, lesson learned... if that is the case, we have to be even more particular with anyone around Grant while his counts are so low.
Anyhow- I think that this has been a long day, and kinda glad that it is 9:00 pm and time to settle in for the evening!!
